BBC WORLD NEWS ASKS YOU TO JOIN TO CELEBRATE ONE YEAR TO THE 2012 LONDON OLYMPICS


2012 is set to be an amazing year in Britain and the BBC is best placed to share the experience with a global audience. Over the next year the BBC will have coverage which spans sport, culture and Britain, showcasing our rich sporting heritage and world-renowned journalism.

New programming opportunities include:

• World Olympic Dreams: follows the lives of 26 athletes as they journey towards the Olympics in London
• Britain Direct: a month of programming and online reports exploring the many faces of the host country
• Destination London: a new weekend show on BBC World News sharing the results and interviews from all the major sports competitions and events leading up to the London Olympics
• Sporting Witness: A vignette series dedicated to sporting history as told by the people who lived through it, offering a uniquely personal perspective about their experience

The coverage starts today with a one year to go celebration at 7pm WAT on BBC World News, live from Trafalgar Square.

CNN to Air New Olympics 2012 Series 'Aiming for Gold'


With just one year to go until the eyes of the world are on London for the Games of the XXX Olympiad, CNN is launching a series of special Olympics 2012 programming, ‘Aiming For Gold’, as it takes on the role of the international home for the greatest sporting event in the world.

CNN’s programme will speak to the biggest Olympic stars, as well as the newsmakers driving the myriad decisions and events that contribute to the 2012 Games, with contributions from its many bureaux around the world to bring all aspects of the event – financial, social, cultural, political or sporting – to global viewers across all its platforms, from TV to cnn.com and through dedicated social media on Twitter and Facebook.

‘Aiming For Gold’ kicks off its year-long programming with a key interview with Lord Sebastian Coe, former Olympic 1500 meter champion and the man responsible for spear-heading the London 2012 campaign. Coe talks to CNN’s Don Riddell about the challenges, controversies and opportunities the Games will bring to people from across the world, including questions from the CNN audience.

Also in the debut show, Becky Anderson reports on London’s history in hosting the games – in 1908, 1948 and now 2012; Stan Grant looks at the legacy of the 2008 Beijing Olympics; and Christina Ohurugu, a British 2008 gold medallist who grew up in the shadow of the games being built in east London, talks about the inspiration the 2012 provide.

2012 Olympics photography contest launched


Photographers who want to their test stamina for sports coverage can enter a contest to cover the 2012 London Olympics.

To win that all-expenses paid trip, they'll have to be one of the best photographers to cover a pentathlon event held this year in: Palm Springs (US), Sassari (Italy), Budapest (Hungary), Chengdu (China)m, London (Great Britain) and Cairo (Egypt).

The Union International de Pentathlon Moderne (UIPM) is sponsoring the UPIM Road to London Olympics Photography Competition. The modern pentathlon includes five events: pistol shooting, épée fencing, freestyle swimming, show jumping and cross-country running. The competition aims to find the five best photographers to cover the events of the 2012 Olympic games.

Based on their applications, candidates under consideration will be invited to cover one of six official UIPM events in 2011. A list of the dates can be found here.

Applicants will be notified 2 weeks prior to an event if they have been accepted and will be evaluated on their portfolio, work ethic and flexibility while working the event. Only three photographers will be invited to cover each event.

Candidates must be able to cover accommodation, travel and time during the competition, be at least 18 and have their own camera. The winners will have all expenses paid during the 2012 Olympic games, which take place from August 9 to 13.
