CAF decision leaves NFF in broadcast quandary

CAF have bundled the broadcast rights for all of the African Nations Cup qualifying matches and sold them to Sport5, a decision that has left the Nigeria Football Federation in a bind with its broadcast partners.

Sunday's African Nations Cup qualifying match against Ethiopia was produced and broadcast by the Nigeria Television Authority, a Sport5 partner, but the NFF have contracts with SuperSport for cable TV rights, and AIT for terrestrial rights. Those contracts run until 2015.

At its Congress last month, CAF took a decision to bundle the rights, and national associations were informed that they would be given 'some funding' with no specifics as to what the sharing formula would be and the status of existing contractual obligations.

South Africa, Cote d'Ivoire and Egypt are in a similar situation to Nigeria and all four countries have written to CAF pointing out their existing obligations and the potential penalties.

In Nigeria, SuperSport and AIT are threatening to sue the NFF for breach of contract and all three sets of parties spent most of the days leading to the match locked in discussions on how to find a resolution to the quandary.

NFF officials are particularly miffed that a letter to CAF last week explaining their situation was ignored.
A temporary agreement was reached to allow NTA take the game pending a final resolution before the next set of qualifiers.

NIGERIA IDOL (THE FINALE)

Finally the moment we had been expecting arrived. Anis invited Lola, the agent from Alexander Forbes on stage to deliver the envelope. Yeka and Naomi were with him and the two ladies held each other waiting to hear who would make history by becoming the first Nigerian Idol.

Anis opened the envelope and dramatically said he couldn’t make the announcement, so he invited Steven Evans, the CEO of Etisalat (Lead sponsor of the show) to announce the winner.  On receiving the envelope, he opened it and announced Yeka the winner thus becoming the first ever Nigerian Idol. It was a historic moment. She was too shocked for words and eventually when she made her speech, she thanked all who believed in her and voted and also mentioned that her final competitor is equally a talented singer. Yeka walks away with the sum of 7.5 Million Naira, a recording contract with Sony, a car and an all expense paid trip to South Africa. All these Is possible because you believed in her and supported her with your votes.  Be on the watch out for Nigerian Idol season II.

MultiChoice to add SuperSport 3 HD (SS3 HD) from 8 April - source.

Thanks to TV with Thinus,I can reveal that MultiChoice will in all likelihood be adding a new high definition (HD) sports channel in the form of SuperSport 3 HD (SS3 HD) from 8 April on DStv channel 176 that will become a new SS EPL HD channel and carry all English Premier League (EPL) matches and other soccer related TV content in HD.

According to a credible insider who then, unsolicited, alerted TV with Thinus, ''the channel will be available to DStv Premium subscribers who use an HD PVR for viewing purposes.''

While SS1 HD will remain channel 171 ''and be designated for Golf, Rugby and Motorsport coverage in HD'', there will apparently be some SS2 HD and SS3 HD changes. ''SS2 HD will carry Cricket, Tennis, PSL, Bundesliga, La Liga, Champions League and Europa League and will also include Motorsport when other big events are on SS1 HD.''

The channel numbering for the SuperSport HD channels are going to change according to this source, as a result of this.

''The new SuperSport HD feed launching on 8 April 2011 will become SS2 HD with the channel number remaining as DStv channel 174. The existing SuperSport 2 HD which hosts English Premier League (EPL) will become the new SuperSport 3 HD and will have a new channel number of DStv 176 and the channel tag will change to SS3 HD.''

I'm also informed that for SuperSport 3 HD Nigeria ''the existing SuperSport 2 HD which hosts the EPL for Nigeria only, [will get a] new channel number 177 and the channel tag will change to SS3 HD.''

TV with Thinus has made a media enquiry to MultiChoice about what I've just been told. MultiChoice says no comment for now and that the pay platform will let subscribers know when its ready to announce any new channels.

Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo 2011 (PRESS RELEASE)

Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo, NAEE, 2011 Abuja, Nigeria – Mathesis Consulting has announced its commitment to organizing an exposition to give an insight into the reformation roadmap the Nigerian Power sector is going through and the opportunity for Green Energy Solutions. The First Nigeria Alternative Energy Expo is organized in partnership with Nigerian’s Ministry of Energy, the Presidential Action committee on Power (PACP), as well as local and multinational organisations, both from the public and private sectors, whose core competency is in developing solutions for Africa’s energy requirements.  This year event will attract more than 4,000 renewable energy power professionals and over 200 exhibiting companies from all over the world. The NAEE 2011 Conference will take place from the 6th – 8th July 2011, at the Yardau Convention Centre, Wuse, Abuja, Nigeria.

One of the major challenges facing Nigeria (with a population of over 150 million) is energy generation and distribution. Since March 2005, with the establishment of the Electric Power Sector Reform Act by the National Assembly, the vision of the power sector reform has been to stimulate adequate levels of investment in the power sector, which the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) put at $10 billion per annum, and
improve the quality of management. The Federal Government has stressed the need to return to the task of pursuing the fundamental changes to ownership, control and regulation of the sector.  In August 2010, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria expressed his commitment to building a solid energy sector: “Our commitment is to bring an end to our nation's stunted growth and usher
in the fresh air of prosperity by pursuing a new era of sector-wide reform which is driven by improved service delivery to every class of customers in the Nigerian electricity sector”.

Amongst other numerous benefits, NAEE 2011 will provide the participants and exhibitors with the opportunity of networking with more than 200 senior level energy sector experts and decision-makers; visiting over 100 leading energy suppliers -  showcasing the latest technologies, equipment and services; establishing a remarkable presence in the Nigerian market; and sourcing of local business agents and partners.

The Mathesis Consulting was founded in 2000, initially, specializing in the organisation of national and international conferences; the company has since transferred its considerable skills to the management of standalone exhibitions, award, programmes and corporate events. With more than 10 years’ experience in the industry, Mathesis Consulting is one of London’s most well-established and reputable conference management companies.

NIGERIAN IDOL:- Emmanuel bows out

It’s the final eviction show of the competition. The contestants have worked tirelessly to improve themselves week after week for them to be at their best and of course win your votes that will see them through. As we all know, the Top 3 to have made it thus far; Yeka Onka, Emmanuel, Naomi, scaling through the auditions, Top 50 stage and Top 13 all thanks to your support. However, there can only be one winner who will be crowned the first ever Nigerian Idol at the Finale on March 27th, 2011.

The eviction show kicked off with an upbeat performance by Jaywon, one of Nigeria’s rising stars in the music industry, popularly known for his song ‘Gbon gbon’. Just as Jaywon got off the stage, the tension was back on. Anis called on Yeka, Emmanuel and Naomi (in that order) to remind them of their performances and the comments they got from the judges last week. Yinka was first to speak. She predicted Naomi (1st), Emmanuel (2nd), and Yeka Onka (3rd). Jeffery's prediction was Naomi (1st), Yeka Onka (2nd) and Emmanuel (3rd). Audu gave his predictions finally saying Naomi would come in first place because of her consistency, while for Emmanuel and Yeka, 'It’s a struggle for 2nd place'- he couldn't decide.

Remember, the judges have no say on who stays and who goes. Whatever predictions they made did not have any effect on the results.

Anis heightened the tension by announcing the first contestant to escape eviction. Yeka’s name was mentioned and she joyfully walked down to the safe seat. Emmanuel and Naomi were left standing; the lights dimmed and all ears paid attention to hear whose name was to be called. Anis called out Naomi as the second safe contestant, thanks to your votes. So, Emmanuel, the last man standing, is automatically the 2nd runner-up in the competition. Yeka Onka and Naomi are the two finalists that will perform this Sunday for your votes. Who will win the grand prize of 7.5million naira, SONY BMG recording contract alongside other prizes? You alone can decide who wins by your votes. You have constantly kept your Idol in the game and the time to ensure your favourite becomes the Nigerian Idol is now. Don’t stop voting

MultiChoice Nigeria Limited has increased it's monthly subscription price effective from 1 April 2011. FX now available on Kenya’s Zuku TV

The male oriented FX channel has been launched in Kenya on pay-TV platform Zuku TV, bringing to six the available offer from Fox International Channels (FIC) now in the East African country.
Kenyan viewers already have access to Fox Entertainment, Baby TV, National Geographic Channel, National Geographic Wild, and National Geographic Adventure.

Kenya’s broadcast market is currently in transition from analogue to digital transmission, which has allowed a number of new private entrants to the scene, including triple play cable operator Zuku TV, operated by the Wananchi Group.

Zuku TV is currently available via cable to higher income families in Nairobi, and plans to roll out its fibre network to urban areas nationwide – as well as launching a satellite TV service in April.

“Given the exciting changes, Kenya is an important country for us to be in, and we see this as our firm entry into the East African market,” said Thandi Davids, regional director, Africa, FIC.

FX has been broadcast in sub-Saharan Africa since May 2010 via Top TV, and the News Corporation subsidiary is now “looking at taking international pay television channels to the continent”. The channel, which carries US series Lie To Me, The Office, The Archer, and The Walking Dead, FIC says, has been well received already in South Africa.

Other entrants to the market challenging Multichoice DSTV’s dominant pan-African satellite TV network include HiTV,StarTimes, My TV and Smart TV – as well as Indian telecommunications and direct to home (DTH) satellite TV operator Airtel, which is reportedly also interested in launching a television platform in Africa.

Sky News Readies Itself for iPad Launch on 17 March.

Sky is keen to launch mobile apps across many smartphone and tablet platforms, despite challenges around monetisation and rights, according to its general manager for mobile, David Gibbs.

“We’ve seen success on iPhone, with 10.2m downloads of our applications,” he said at the Mobile Monday event in London.

“But it’s important if we’re going to make a real commitment to mobile, we need to be ubiquitous as possible. It’s important that we spread ourselves across all of the platforms. That can be quite expensive, but if you’re committed to it, you have to invest.”

Gibbs said Sky has been impressed with the performance of its apps on BlackBerry smartphones – “it’s been a really encouraging platform for us” – and said the broadcaster is monitoring the progress of Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) for Windows Phone.

And Android? Sky has developed apps for Android, but Gibbs said there are specific issues with Google’s OS that are preventing the company from investing heavily. “The big sticking point at the moment is security around streams,” he said.

“We can’t protect those streams to meet the obligations for our rightsholders. There will be a solution around September-time, but it’s a challenge: we’re optimising someone else’s [DRM] solution and putting a wrapper around it. We would like to have been there earlier, as we are aware there is a significant number of Android customers.”

Gibbs described Apple’s iPad 2 as a “really exciting platform”, picking out its ability to display 1080p resolution HD video. However, Sky is taking an equally balanced view to the tablet market in the long term.

“We’re looking at all tablets,” he said. “BlackBerry PlayBook is an interesting proposition for us, as the specific BlackBerry audience offers something different to the iPad and Android devices. But we’re looking at all of them. You have to follow the customer.”

He sidestepped questions about Apple’s new rules on iOS subscriptions, while admitting that “the whole debate changed quite a bit last week” around charging for iOS applications.

Overall, Gibbs was bullish about smartphones and tablets, though. “We see this as the third screen, and increasingly becoming the second screen for our customers.”

He said that broadcasters are resisting the pressure to reach fixed conclusions about business models in the apps space.

“The beauty of this is you can experiment with different models, and afford to change things around. We have an existing subscription for our customers, so how do we extend that subscription and add value to it in our tablet products, and how do we create new customers? It’s still a learning process.”

Gibbs warned that Sky has to operate within its rights agreements and the security obligations around them, meaning that there are some restrictions to the content it can offer on tablets – especially in the light of technologies such as Apple’s AirPlay, which lets iPad users stream video from apps to their television.
